Balfour Beatty discusses matching skills with project complexity in Civil Engineering Surveyor magazine

Civil Engineering Surveyor (CES) magazine discussing Balfour Beatty’s approach to up-skilling its workforce.
Balfour Beatty’s innovative approach centres on ensuring an individual’s skills and experience are aligned to contract risk and complexity. Collaboration with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) supported the creation of a competency assessment tool, which has now been successfully rolled out to over 900 employees within Balfour Beatty’s Commercial community. The assessment can be completed online by the individual and is then approved by line management.
There are multiple benefits to approaching workforce development in this way. For employees, each individual is now able to understand their level of competency in detail. They can work with their line manager to identify particular goals and career development plans that will support them in achieving their competency targets.
For Balfour Beatty, the company can now better understand the competency of its Commercial Community. Employees with particular competency skill sets can be identified for current and future roles, and competency trends can be monitored to enable the design and delivery of specific development solutions or the adaptation of existing courses to meet the needs of the workforce.
