We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and thank you in advance for your continued patience during these essential works.

We are pleased to report we are moving into the next phase of works as the Elton Interchange scheme progresses.

This month:

  • Earth work was completed, and narrow lanes were removed from the A66 main line
  • Fencing and topsoil on the A66 was completed and kerbing on west bound slip was undertaken
  • The second half of the waterproofing and surfacing on the bridge deck was completed
  • Traffic management was switched to remove the right-turn prohibition
  • Splitter islands on the North of the A66 are in progress
  • Sign installation is ongoing as the project progresses
  • A new pedestrian guard rail installed throughout site
  • We attended STEM Fest 2023 showcasing Balfour Beatty’s technology pathways to over 1500 students
  • We shared Balfour Beatty’s social impact achievements from the Elton Interchange project at the Tees Valley Business Engagement Event.
  • The ‘Big Big Project’ with Egglescliffe school was concluded with a group feedback session and presentation of certificates

Works progressed well in June across three main areas of the A66, Overbridge and Yarm Back Lane.

This month:

  • The temporary barrier was removed on the A66 eastbound on slip which allowed for the tarmac, lining and surfacing to be completed and a new safety barrier to be installed
  • Waterproofing has been carried out and on the bridge deck and kerbs are ongoing
  • Drainage and gullies on Yarm Back Lane were complete and kerbs are currently being installed
  • Balfour Beatty and Arup supported The Princes Trust at Stockton Riverside College with interview skills preparation and mock interviews
  • Our project engineer supported Stockton Sixth Form careers event to share their pathway into the industry

We will be undertaking work to widen the carriageway on the A66 Westbound off slip, commencing Tuesday 2nd May 2023.

To undertake the widening of the carriageway we will require an inside lane closure along the length of the slip road. Traffic management will be in place during off peak hours (09:30 – 15:30).

We thank you for your continued patience during these essential works.

Phase 3 & 4 of the Elton Interchange scheme is underway which utilises temporary traffic signals for the full junction. During these phases access onto the A66 in an eastbound direction will not be possible and the signed diversion route should be utilised.

This month:

  • Excavated and started the extension of the pedestrian culvert at Hartburn
  • Excavated the A66 overbridge and undertook testing in advance of re-waterproofing
  • Ongoing drainage and ducting works
  • Reminder that no right turn is available from Durham Lane onto the A66 eastbound slip road towards Middlesbrough. To gain access to the A66 Eastbound, please follow the signed diversion in place via A66 westbound to Long Newton (towards Darlington), to regain access onto the A66 eastbound (towards Middlesbrough)
  • Employability skills session delivered at St. Patrick’s Catholic College and bridge building activity with St. Marks CE VA Primary School
  • Balfour Beatty are mentoring a team of students at Egglescliffe School and ‘The Good Eggs’ have made it to the final round of The Big Big Project!

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation during these essential works.

  • Tarmac has now been laid on the new Darlington Road alignment.
  • Lighting column installation has commenced across areas of the site, ready to be illuminated.
  • Yarm Back Lane culvert extension is now complete.
  • Utility diversions are complete, allowing the final road formation to be excavated and construction of corridors completed.
  • We welcomed 'Civil Engineering' students from Teesside University for site visits.
  • Donations were made to 2 local foodbanks ahead of the festive period.
  • Road widening works have continued on the A66 Eastbound slip road. Kerb installation and tarmac base layers are currently underway.
  • The new ‘Darlington Road’ alignment is now taking shape with kerbs installed and tarmac layers due to be placed over the coming weeks.
  • Works have commenced on the existing drainage culvert which passes under Yarm Back Lane. This extension will allow the road to be widened.
  • Utility diversions to allow Yarm Back Lane widening and the Darlington Road realignment are underway. Civil works are nearing completion allowing final switchover to the new services.
  • Drainage works have commenced, including the installation of 3 attenuation tanks to store surface water during periods of high flows from the new road layout, one covering almost 1000m2.
  • Narrow lanes were installed in early June which has allowed the embankments to be re-profiled in preparation for the widening and lengthening of the Eastbound on slip. Associated drainage is currently being installed to allow removal of the existing system to create space for widening the existing Slip Road.
  • New drainage has commenced and will be followed by lighting and road construction. This allowed embankment to be created utilising existing site won material. Approximately 3000m3 of material has been moved within the site to build this road which will carry the new Darlington Road alignment.
  • Culverting of the existing Greens Beck has been undertaken to facilitate the flow of surface water beneath the new highway alignment.
