Inspiring women to join the energy sector

The Women in Power initiative began with a simple yet powerful LinkedIn post by a project manager working in our Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) business. She shared a ‘Day in the Life’ experience as a female project manager, highlighting the positive impact of her role. The post resonated widely, gaining significant traction and sparking conversations about female representation in the industry.

Building on this momentum, we hosted two webinars to inspire and encourage women to explore careers at Balfour Beatty, attracting over 100 attendees. Additionally, we organised a women-only open day at our overhead line training towers facility in Raynesway, Derby to learn about the industry and overhead line works, with the opportunity to climb a 30-metre-high transmission pylon.

These efforts have made a tangible impact on gender diversity within our Power T&D business unit. In 2024, more than 25% of new hires were women. As part of our broader attraction strategy, we have also prioritised flexibility – ensuring that, where possible, roles can be part-time or adapted for smart working, particularly in remote locations.
