Press Release

Balfour Beatty ‘Open Doors’ to allow the public a glimpse behind the scenes

29 March 2017

UK

This week (Monday 27th March – Saturday 1st April) Balfour Beatty welcomes members of the public to its construction sites across the UK to support Build UK’s Open Doors event.

This popular annual event welcomes members of the public from all age ranges and professions including students, those seeking guidance on alternative career paths and those who are interested in the built environment, to visit a construction site in order to learn more about the vast career opportunities on offer in the construction industry.

Balfour Beatty’s infrastructure experts from its design and build trainees to its Project Directors will welcome up to 130 members of the public to nine of its sites across the UK, providing a site tour and the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the industry.

Balfour Beatty has opened its doors on sites including the Norwich Northern Distributor Road, a new road which will dramatically improve journey times and ease congestion, the University of Bristol’s Fry Building, a Grade II listed building which is being renovated and extended to provide state-of-the art facilities for the School of Mathematics and Balfour Beatty’s Overhead Line Training Centre in Derby which provides power transmission training for the next generation of engineers and supports Balfour Beatty’s overhead line, cabling and substation construction operations nationwide.

Liam Donnelly, Balfour Beatty UK HR Director, said: “As the UK’s largest Infrastructure Company we must be advocates for the plethora of opportunities across a wide range of professions which are available within the construction industry. Working with Open Doors, being members of The 5% Club and being involved with the Apprenticeship Diversity Champions Network are just a few of the ways in which companies, such as Balfour Beatty, can make a difference and help to bridge the skills gap that this industry currently faces.

“At Balfour Beatty we proactively recruit, train and retain across a broad range of backgrounds, skills and experiences – be it our Returners Programme, available for those who have taken an extended leave from their professional career of more than two years; working with ex-offenders to help guide them back into employment; or supporting the British Forces Resettlement Services by advising service personnel on careers within the construction industry.

“We are always seeking to develop the next Balfour Beatty Expert and look forward to welcoming the public to our sites across the UK during Open Doors to show them, first-hand, what exciting prospects are available to them within construction”.
