Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Selected as Preferred Bidder for Bergstrom Expressway in USA Joint Venture

2 June 2015

US

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., in joint venture with Fluor Corporation, has been awarded a four-year design-build contract by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority). Together, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure and Fluor will provide design and construction services valued at $581 million for the Bergstrom Expressway project located in Austin, Texas. The joint venture, Colorado River Constructors, JV, will design and reconstruct approximately eight miles of US 183 from US 290 in Austin, to SH 71 near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The project is expected to break ground in 2016 with construction set to continue into 2020.

“In our 14-year relationship with Fluor, we have been involved in nearly $3 billion of critical transportation projects in the state of Texas,” said John Rempe, PE, Vice President of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure’s Southwest Region. “The Bergstrom Expressway project is our fourth, major design-build collaboration in Texas. We are eager to build upon this successful partnership with this project to reduce congestion and improve connectivity throughout the Austin community.”

The Bergstrom Expressway project will add capacity to one of Austin’s most important arterial roadways which serves more than 60,000 vehicles a day. The project scope of work includes the design and construction of six tolled lanes – three in each direction – located in the median of U.S. 183, upgrades to the general purpose lanes, five grade-separated interchanges and four new bridges, along with two new direct connect fly over ramps and the installation of intelligent traffic management systems. The scope also includes improvements and upgrades to major interchanges along the corridor and bike and pedestrian sidewalks with shared-use paths.

“Increasing our presence in the design-build and alternative delivery markets for transportation and infrastructure projects is directly in line with our corporate strategy,” said Ray Bond, President and CEO of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. “The Bergstrom Expressway project is a critical component of this long-term strategy, and we look forward to safely delivering it through 2020.”
