Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, today announces it is partnering with Fujitsu in a five- year, multi-million pound deal to transform its IT systems in the UK.
Fujitsu will be working with Balfour Beatty to establish a flexible and agile IT solution that can drive innovation and support its work across the UK operational areas of construction, engineering, utilities, facilities management and rail.
The move to standardise IT systems is a key part of Balfour Beatty’s aim to improve collaboration and knowledge sharing across all parts of the business, as it implements its strategic growth plan and looks to use that knowledge to provide clients with better advice and end-to-end solutions.
Balfour Beatty Chief Finance Officer Duncan Magrath said: “We want to be able to offer our clients smarter solutions where technology plays an ever greater part. Therefore I am delighted we will be working in partnership with Fujitsu, with its strong and innovative R&D sector. Not only can it support us in the delivery of our UK strategy, it can help us understand and adapt for our future needs.
“Across Balfour Beatty we have a knowledge and skill base which is second to none. Using IT to improve collaboration through shared platforms and networks will be key as we grow as a global infrastructure player and increasingly look for technological solutions, such as BIM.”
Richard Bull, Executive Director End User Services at Fujitsu UK & Ireland, commented: “The objective here is to create an agile and scalable IT environment that provides Balfour Beatty with the ability to flex according to its customers requirement - as well as helping to reduce IT costs. It is also giving Balfour Beatty the opportunity to truly innovate its business – and to future proof for developing trends. We are confident that we’ll achieve that – and are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Balfour Beatty.”
As a complex organisation - with designers, planners, engineers, builders, managers, analysts and consultants across a multitude of locations - Balfour Beatty wanted a technology solution which would allow the business to flex according to clients’ needs, whilst being prepared for future advances in technology. The deal with Fujitsu will initially provide Balfour Beatty with a responsive IT structure which can deal with huge amounts of asset data required and collected for major infrastructure projects.
Consolidated and rationalised data centres will be provided by Fujitsu and new computer equipment and a standardised desktop and applications portfolio will be introduced for around 14,000 users across 450 permanent and 600 temporary sites in the UK, enabling easier collaboration and information sharing across all the businesses.
Fujitsu was selected by Balfour Beatty for its proven track record for delivering projects of a similar large scale, for its experience working with public sector focused organisations and for its global reach and scale.
Representatives from Balfour Beatty and Fujitsu are available for interview upon request.
