Employee referral scheme

We’re looking for more people like… you!

We know that it’s our expert, highly-skilled colleagues and partners that set us apart, and we recognise we need to attract more people with diverse skillsets, backgrounds and experiences to help us deliver some of the most complex national infrastructure projects across the UK.

We want to be an employer of choice for high-quality talent, irrelevant of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, social background, faith, age or disability – because we know that diversity makes us a better business. So, we’re encouraging our employees to open their contact books and refer someone to one of our open roles.

To say thank you, each time you successfully refer someone you will receive a referral payment of £1500.

The referral scheme is open to all employees, with some minor exceptions. Read our FAQs below to find out more.

Refer and Earn FAQs

The referred candidate should be asked to apply for the role through the Balfour Beatty Careers website.

They will be asked to provide the full name and email address (either Balfour Beatty email or personal email) of the referring Balfour Beatty employee. This will trigger an email communication to be sent directly to the referring Balfour Beatty employee to notify them that the candidate has applied for a role.

We want to reflect the diversity of the locations in which we operate, so please consider everyone that you know - we would really like to hear from a diverse range of people.

In order to ensure our approach to recruitment and selection remains inclusive, we have applied some limited exceptions to our Refer and Earn scheme. These can be found within these FAQs.

Communication will automatically be sent to the email address which was provided to us by the referred candidate. If this is not your Balfour Beatty email account, you will need to double check if the email communication has been sent to a different account or may be within a spam folder.

If you are sure that the referring candidate provided a correct email address for you, and you have not received an email, please contact the Recruitment team.

If your referred candidate accepts an offer with us, you will be contacted directly by the recruiter to thank you for your referral and you will be asked to provide your employee ID number. Instructions on how to find it can be found below.

To be eligible for the referral payment the person you referred must begin employment with us.

If you have any questions or don’t have an email address, you can contact the Recruitment team directly.

We are committed to paying your referral payment as quickly as we can and aim to make the payment within six weeks of the referred candidate joining Balfour Beatty.

Payment is subject to you having followed the scheme rules and supplying us with your employee ID number. Details on how to find your employee ID number can be found below.

Exceptions - when a referral will not be eligible for Refer and Earn

  • Where the referring Balfour Beatty employee is involved in the selection process, or will be the line manager, or where they exercise any management control of the referred candidate.
  • Where the referred candidate is a family member of the referring Balfour Beatty employee.
  • If the referring Balfour Beatty employee is under notice of termination, whether given or received during this period.
  • Directors or Senior Managers (Grade F+) and the HR Team are not eligible to participate in the scheme. Some exceptions to the HR Team may apply.
  • A referral payment will not be made where the referred candidate is a former employee of Balfour Beatty who has left the company in the last 12 months
  • Early Careers roles are not eligible for the scheme (apprentices, graduates, interns and placements)
  • Roles advertised as lasting for less than 12 months in duration, will not be eligible for the scheme

If you don’t have a Balfour Beatty email account, the referred candidate will be able to provide a personal email address. Payment is subject to you having followed the scheme rules and supplying us with your employee ID number. Details on how to find your employee ID number can be found below.

For employees who don’t have a Balfour Beatty email account, the referred candidate will be able to provide any email address for the referring Balfour Beatty employee.

Absolutely! A large number of our vacancies are weekly-paid, and we need your help to fill them.

We need you to confirm your employee ID number so that we can ensure that we are paying the correct person, as quickly as possible. There are a number of ways you can find your employee ID number, if you don’t already know it.

1. By logging into Oracle R12
2. Through HR Shared Services (HRSS) live chat
3. On your payslip
4. Or call our HRSS team on 0191 228 2991 (Option 1). Lines are open Mon-Fri 8am to 5:30pm

Different scheme rules and payment amounts may apply on some of our joint ventures. In these cases, the scheme rules of where the referred candidate is applying will be applied.

For example, if you work on our Balfour Beatty VINCI JV on HS2 and refer a candidate to a Balfour Beatty UK role, the Balfour Beatty UK scheme rules will apply.

We are always open to hearing about great candidates, even if you don’t immediately see a role you think would be the perfect fit. In the first instance you should contact the Recruitment team, as they will best placed to advise on current roles and future requirements.

To be eligible for a referral payment someone you refer would need to be hired into a Balfour Beatty role and start with Balfour Beatty.

For referred candidates without internet access, ensure all the referring Balfour Beatty employee details are included in the manual/paper application or via a covering letter and CV.

We’re happy to receive referrals of family members, but these referrals won’t be eligible for a referral payment and must go through the standard Balfour Beatty hiring process.

In this instance, we will make payment to whoever made us aware of the candidate first.

If they were referred by the agent before you referred them, the agent will be the primary referrer. It is worth speaking to your contact to check that they don’t have a current, live application with Balfour Beatty before you refer them.

The referral payment is made on the basis that you referred a candidate into a Balfour Beatty role and they begin employment within Balfour Beatty (subject to some exceptions – see above).

Therefore, nothing will happen should the individual subsequently chose to leave Balfour Beatty.

We welcome referrals of previous employees; however, you will not receive a referral fee if they left Balfour Beatty in the 12 months prior to you referring them.

We welcome applications from candidates who work for our joint venture partners. However, as they are already part of the wider Balfour Beatty family, you will not be eligible for a referral payment for referring them.

Before referring a candidate who works on a JV, please make sure that we are not breaching any contractual agreements we have with our customers or joint venture partners.
