About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently seeking a Principal Drainage Design Engineer to join their Power T&D team in Scotland.


Role Purpose:-


To work with project team, designers and subcontractors through the developing stages of project to detailed design phase to deliver a safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.


Take responsibility for the drainage works including water, flooding and drainage designs. Support project teams in defining the drainage strategy at all phases of the project including tender stage and price them so that all drainage risks are accounted for.


You will evaluate drainage designs at FEED stage and assess their suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects.


Provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of both permanent and temporary drainage designs works for Power T&D business around Cabling, Overhead Lines and Substations.


Engage in bid development, tendering and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead & Design Delivery Lead.

What you'll be doing








Key Accountabilities:



  • Provide technical support for all drainage works throughout the developing stages of the project.

  • Prioritising and coordinating day to day tasks and resources in relation to your projects.

  • Supporting the development of fee estimates and programmes before monitoring project delivery and undertaking necessary change control.

  • Specialise in highway drainage, as well as incorporating expertise in water utilities and Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA).

  • Liaise with all stakeholders, local authorities and statutory regulatory bodies in establishing working approach and consents to develop an agreed drainage strategy for projects. 

  • Ensure the timely delivery and quality of drainage designs including preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level which are compliant with the required Client and national technical standards (BS/DMRB/ MCHW/ National Forestry Commission/ Eurocodes/ENA).









Key Responsibilities:



  • To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project. Including:

  • Producing and checking drainage design calculations, flood risk assessment reports, drawings, design models, design strategy reports and specifications

  • Setting appropriate sustainable drainage strategies for projects and obtaining appropriate consents for drainage proposals via the local authority planning approval process, including making pre-development enquiries and consultations with statutory authorities and lead local flood authorities

  • Demonstrate relevant knowledge of underground drainage design to current European Standards a long with experience of designing drainage and SUDS systems to CIRIA C753 SuDS Manual guidance, with practical use of Innovyze InfoDrainage design software or MicroDrainage, it is imperative to have direct experience in consulting with local sewer operators, Lead Local Flood Authorities, the Environment Agency (EA) or National Resources Wales (NRW) or Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)

  • To perform/assist with the production of in-house drainage designs and checking of 3rd party drainage work designs for their suitability.

  • Undertake check function for design calculations performed by other engineering colleagues.

  • Maintain compliance of CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of designs output by the team.

  • Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval as required / permitted by the Chief Engineer and the Design Delivery Lead.

  • Assist in the management of the tender process, understand and interpret scope of works, provide advice and opinion.

  • Ensure that Procedures and Manuals provided for compliance with the appropriate Quality Assurance Standards are applied.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the team

  • Support in the advancement of the engineering design delivery for the team with particular focus on upskilling and use of software. Contribute to the development and updating of the design aids and computer programmes and assist in the analysis of new design concepts.

  • Support colleagues in managing the output and delivery of suitable design drawings.

  • Assist in determining team objectives, strategy and requirements.



Who we're looking for








Skills Required:



  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering (BSc, MSc, BEng or MEng)

  • Chartered Engineer preferred with either the ICE or IStructE

  • Working knowledge and understanding of C753 SuDs Manual guidance, MCHW, DMRB, Eurocode etc

  • Experience with supervision of sub-consultants or subcontractors

  • Proven experience of the design of civil engineering drainage works.

  • Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or temporary works



IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD, Civils 3D, Infraworks etc)
