What you'll be doing
As a Section Engineer you will:
- Live the Balfour Beatty Values;
- Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm;
- Support the delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities.
Health Safety & Environmental
- Produce Method Statements and Risk Assessments and undertakes periodic reviews;
- Prepare and raise Temporary Works Briefs, following up to ensure timely implementation;
- Carry out Visitors Induction;
- Complete Accident Book and associated reports as required. Able to undertake incident investigations to required standard;
- Undertake and mentors less experienced staff in safety audits.
Engineering Control
- Carry out complex setting out;
- Provision of ‘primary’ setting out control and recognizes the optimum location for installation;
- Coach junior engineers in the use of setting out techniques.
Quality
- Produce Activity Control Plans / Inspection and Test Plans and obtains approval;
- Actively uses the Specification for reference and coaches junior team members in using the Spec;
- Maintain a comprehensive filing system of quality records aligned to the Project Quality Handover requirements;
- Ensure that Site Engineers complete the required quality checksheets on a timely basis for the works;
- Identifie, raises and actions Non Conformance Reports. Tracks close-out of NCRs within section;
- Identify and raise Technical Queries (RFIs) with possible solutions. Tracks closeout of RFIs within section.
Productivity
- Produce a weekly programme and measures progress against KPI’s;
- Communicate weekly programme and targets to the workforce;
- Monitors as-built programme and reports reasons for difference;
- Liaises with subcontractors to ensure works undertaken in line with weekly programme.
Commercial
- Maintain accurate diary, including dialogue with external organisations (subcontractors);
- Collate Weekly Measure information and monitors wastage against budget allowances / KPI’s;
- Carry out a labour and plant reconciliation and supervises less experienced team members;
- Identify items of additional work and raises the necessary notifications;
- Work to specific terms, conditions and outputs of relevant subcontractors and suppliers.

Personal Qualities and Experience:
Core
- Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately. Suggests improvements to systems;
- Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes with clarity;
- Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights;
- Able to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with level of responsibility;
- Holds a current driving license and CSCS Card. SSSTS or SMSTS qualified;
- Must be a strong team player, with developed communication skills.
Health Safety & Environmental
- Understands Permit System and actively raises Permits to Work;
- Is able to identify potential hazards and is proactive in implementing actions and controls;
- Good level of Environmental Awareness.
Engineering Control
- Able to carry out complex setting out;
- Able to resolve issues with control and information provided;
- Able to identify issues on drawings and suggest construction solutions.
Quality
- Understands and has experience of producing ACP;
- Actively drives the production of quality handover documentation and information;
- Strong understanding of construction tolerances;
- Awareness of Specification and other Contract documents.
Productivity
- Understands and can use the information provided in the Stage Programme, disseminating this to the team;
- Strong knowledge of construction process in one or more of the following areas: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, Roadworks.
Commercial
- Good understanding of key contract documentation and understands how to record additional work;
- Understands specific terms, conditions and outputs of relevant subcontractors and suppliers;
- Understands required records for commercial recovery and supervises production of these by junior team members.
