What you'll be doing
- Ensure a personal relentless focus on driving the adoption of a sustainable mindset
- Interpret sustainability related data and translate these data sets into meaningful, practical and operational actions for improvements
- Support the adoption of these actions through supporting the creation of meaningful sustainability action plans
- Support the development of Sustainability KPIs and on-going reporting requirements
- Support the Sustainability Manager in identifying and commercially validating product, process, paradigm, and position innovations to help advance the sustainability agenda within Balfour Beatty
- Support the learning and development of the SBUs through sustainability training sessions, presentations, supplier and customer education forums
- Inspire individuals across the group to become more sustainable and to promote sustainability within their own functions and businesses
- Live the Balfour Beatty Values
- Support compliance with all Regulations and Company Policies & Processes
- Support engagement with key customers and suppliers to understand their sustainability needs and how best to deliver against/support them
- Input to sustainability reports externally for customers and internally for the SBUs and leadership teams as required.
- Support effective sustainability governance through the sustainability working groups or forums
- Provide sustainability knowledge to the group and SBUs to support work winning and operational improvements around sustainability
- Support work winning in responding to bespoke sustainability questions and promoting sustainability innovation
- Contribute to and co-ordinate case studies from signature projects that reflect Balfour Beatty innovation and expertise to support efforts in business development and enhance the external reputation of Balfour Beatty
- Feed into the SBU communications plan with sustainability content and use communications and improvements to engage staff on an on-going basis
- As part of the sustainability Centre of Excellence, develop knowledge in the UK around sustainability specialist areas (e.g., carbon, water, waste, materials & responsible sourcing, circular economy, biodiversity, social value, community engagement, BREEAM, CEEQUAL)
- Maintain up to date knowledge of UK and global developments on sustainability to ensure the group strategy and policy remains market leading and grow personal network in Balfour Beatty
- Represent Balfour Beatty at relevant industry forums / events
Who we're looking for
The following qualities and experience are essential:
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills are required
- Knowledge and experience of sustainability and how it practically impacts on the ‘built environment’, including some knowledge of whole life costing
- The individual will be comfortable working with experts in sustainability (carbon, water, waste, materials & responsible sourcing, circular economy, biodiversity, social value, community engagement, BREEAM, CEEQUAL)
- Programme delivery experience with a structured approach to organising and
documenting progress
- Good influencing skills
- Strong IT skills
- Able to work well independently without direct supervision
- A good understanding of UK environment and sustainability legislation and government policy
- Willing and able to travel UK-wide and work away from home when necessary
- Full driving licence
The following qualities and experience are desirable:
- Member of or working towards membership of the Institute of Environmental
Management & Assessment (or other relevant body) at an appropriate level (e.g.,
Practitioner)
- Relevant environmental or sustainability degree
- Experience of working with the principles of sustainability in business
- Experience of management systems, particularly ISO 14001 & PAS 2080
