Training & apprenticeships

We provide a wide range of traditional apprenticeships and training opportunities, and a strong programme for graduates, as well as a number of innovative and market-leading initiatives for students and school leavers.

We provide strong support for development generally, and for apprenticeships and training for undergraduates and graduates in particular.

Apprenticeships

“Balfour Beatty creates high-quality apprenticeships for hundreds of people, both directly and in the companies we work with. Apprentices are an important part of our workforce. They are crucial to ensuring we have the right skills and experience in our business and that we retain talent through providing attractive opportunities for development and career progression.”
Richard Gartside, Balfour Beatty Director of Talent & Development

As you might expect of a leading employer, we sponsor a wide range of high-quality apprenticeships across a broad range of disciplines, including electrical mechanical engineering, plumbing, utilities, high-voltage engineering, construction and civil engineering.

We also sponsor the Balfour Beatty Apprenticeship scheme, a market-leading initiative run in conjunction with a national apprentice training provider. Under this programme, we act as a guarantor for apprenticeships with subcontractors engaged by the Group. In effect, this means we will employ apprentices during their time with one of our contractors and, if the training cannot be completed, we will step in to ensure the opportunity is extended with another contractor.

This unique programme enables us to promote a significant number of apprenticeships and to guarantee that the training will be completed, despite a degree of uncertainty across the industry. The scheme was launched in Bolton in 2010 and is now in place throughout the north west of England and is being expanded in the Midlands and across the country.

Our apprenticeship opportunities are advertised on our careers site.

National Apprenticeships WeekWe also sponsor a 'Get Into Construction' programme for long-term unemployed people with the Prince's Trust. This programme provides a mix of both course work and 'on the job' learning and, on completion, we offer placements to a number of participants.

Undergraduates & graduates

We operate a range of summer vacation and year-long placements in construction-related disciplines such as construction and engineering management, commercial management and quantity surveying which can be undertaken as part of your degree course.

We also enable students to obtain a 'Degree without Debt' by providing places on part-time degree courses that allow participants to study whilst they are employed by Balfour Beatty. This means students could gain a degree over five years with Balfour Beatty paying all the fees and a salary, as well as providing excellent work experience and a management career on completion of studies.

Since 1993, we've been involved in an innovative partnership with Liverpool College and Liverpool John Moores University to provide a four-year, block release sandwich course combining periods of full-time study with training and work. Students of mechanical, electrical and commercial areas work together in teams with a strong emphasis on project work. At the end of the programme, they are awarded a BSc (Hons) in Building Services Engineering. Participants are paid by the company throughout the course and we also fund tuition fees to deliver, in effect, a 'debt-free degree' for students.

We offer a high-quality Graduate development programme that encompasses project management and personal and leadership development programmes, as well as access to technical and professional training.
