Balfour Beatty has featured in New Civil Engineer, highlighting its role in delivering NZT Power in Teesside, the world’s first commercial-scale gas-fired power station designed with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS).

The article explores the scale and complexity of the landmark project, which will generate up to 742MW of electricity, enough to meet the average annual power needs of more than one million UK homes, while capturing approximately 95% of its carbon dioxide emissions. As main construction subcontractor, Balfour Beatty is delivering the civil engineering works, including extensive foundations and infrastructure required to support the facility’s major equipment and carbon capture systems.

The feature also highlights the project's significant investment in the UK supply chain, local skills development and job creation, with more than 3,000 people expected to work on the project during construction.

Reflecting on the significance of the development, Andy Lambden, Project Director at Balfour Beatty, said: “Projects of this scale have been relatively rare in the UK in recent decades, and delivering a major development at pace inevitably brings challenges around skills and workforce availability. However, it also presents a significant opportunity to develop local talent, create long-term careers and leave a lasting legacy within the region.”

Talking about the collaborative approach on the project, Julie Cranga, Project Sponsor at Technip Energies, added: “Although everybody has a clear scope, we work in a collaborative manner with people at each level knowing how to work together towards common objectives.”
