Security Futures Project, Edinburgh Airport

We have installed state-of-the-art security machines to support modern airport operations, ensuring a smoother and more secure travel experience for passengers at Scotland's busiest airport.

As part of a £24 million investment by Edinburgh Airport Ltd, we have successfully completed an £8 million project to upgrade security infrastructure at Edinburgh Airport. The Security Futures Project is a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing security screening technology to meet UK Government, Department for Transport mandated requirements.

Modernising airport security and efficiency

To modernise airport security and create quicker more streamlined passenger experiences, we have carried out significant upgrades to the central search area, control posts, and infrastructure services to incorporate innovative security technology that meets the latest UK legal and regulatory standards.

Upgrades included the installation of:

  • 8 Smiths HI-SCAN 6040 CTiXX-ray machines
  • UV C tray sterilisation systems
  • Remote security screening equipment
  • 14 new body scanners
  • 6 new repacking booths
  • 3 new modular control posts
  • 9 new Liquids Explosive Detection Systems
  • Upgraded MEP and building fabric within the terminal building

3D

x-ray scanning technology

The installation of the new enhanced 3D X-ray scanning technology and image quality within the scanners allows passengers to place their bags directly onto trays and put them through scanners without removing liquids and electrical devices from their bags. As well as improving passenger experiences, the upgrades have also reduced several manual processes and reduced airport running expenses.

Meticulous planning for seamless airport operations

With a long-standing history in the aviation industry and over 25 years of working at Edinburgh Airport, we have developed extensive expertise in managing complex logistics and security arrangements while ensuring minimal impact on airport operations.

Working collaboratively with the airport team, we created a detailed timeline and carefully planned all works in phases to ensure a smooth transition and timely project delivery. Phase 1 included the creation of new management offices, staff welfare facilities and storage spaces. Our team installed temporary remote screening pods, while removing existing and providing new remote screening areas. In subsequent phases, we installed new security lanes, body scanners, and search benches, all conducted behind hoarding to maintain security. Control posts were upgraded sequentially, with temporary posts in place to manage all traffic landside and airside during construction.

Michael Hering, Head of Security at Edinburgh Airport said:

Expanding and modernising our security hall and processes will ensure a more seamless, efficient and safer security process for our passengers, and something this project has delivered on.
