Improving opportunities in construction

Young people, particularly those in areas of high deprivation, often face barriers to accessing site-based work experience in construction.

To help address this, Balfour Beatty developed the Industry Insights programme – a hybrid work experience model designed to improve access to the industry for young people.

The programme combines virtual learning with targeted project involvement, allowing students to gain insight into construction careers without placing additional pressure on live sites. Delivery is supported through our people’s paid volunteering leave, enabling teams across the business to contribute in a flexible and manageable way.

During summer and autumn 2025, 469 students registered on the platform, with 18 schools and colleges engaged across 20 priority locations. Students were able to develop industry knowledge and transferable skills, while gaining visibility of early careers.

By creating a more flexible and accessible work experience model, we are helping more young people explore early pathways into the construction industry.
