Improving gender diversity through early careers

Improving gender diversity remains an important priority for the construction industry. Through Gammon – our joint venture with Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong – structured early careers pathways are helping individuals develop skills and progress in a traditionally male‑dominated sector.

In 2023, Irene Cheung made a decisive move from healthcare into construction, inspired by her sister’s journey into engineering. She joined Gammon as a Technician Apprentice through the Vocational Training Council (VTC) Earn and Learn Scheme, gaining hands‑on site experience while studying towards a Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering.

Clear career pathways and supportive mentoring helped Irene quickly stand out. She was awarded the Outstanding Apprentice Award by Hong Kong’s VTC — one of only two recipients in the construction sector.

Reflecting on her experience, Irene said the programme gave her the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams and apply theoretical learning to real‑world challenges.

Through initiatives like this, Gammon is helping challenge gender stereotypes while supporting the next generation of construction professionals.
