Creating sustainable learning environments in the US
Working with our corporate charity partner, Groundwork, we delivered a ‘Breathe Easy School’ project at The Ellen Wilkinson School (EWPS) in Newham, London to improve air quality in the area.
The Breathe Easy School initiative aims to protect children by creating natural air pollution barriers by using trees and plants to provide a green shield around schools and outdoor learning areas to reduce air pollution, which is a factor in increased ill-health within towns and cities.
On the day, 41 volunteers from Balfour Beatty and our supply chain partners helped plant 230 cedar evergreen trees around the playground perimeter, creating a natural barrier between the school and surrounding roads. Groundwork specifically chose conifers for their ability to capture pollutants, with the goal of reducing hazardous air pollution levels and improving air quality.
“On behalf of all at EWPS many thanks for our new trees. Not only do they make the playground look better, but they are also great for the environment. Your team was enthusiastic, hardworking, and a pleasure to work with. We look forward to inviting you back again sometime in the future.”
