Protecting peatland through careful site design
As part of enabling works for the Sizewell C Rail Scheme, vegetation clearance was required along the branch line to support programme delivery. The works needed to progress efficiently while carefully managing ecological risks and regulatory compliance across a sensitive environment as the clearance area supported protected species.
A dedicated ecology team oversaw the works, including 15 Ecological Clerks of Works, 10 bat‑accredited agents and 3 badger‑accredited agents, ensuring ecological protection was embedded throughout the programme.
Alongside the clearance, the team introduced nature‑positive measures including hibernacula, habitat piles and wildflower seeding, helping enhance habitats for local wildlife.
In total, 135 tonnes of vegetation were chipped for biomass energy, with remaining arisings supplied to Network Rail for habitat creation at Saxmundham Station, extending biodiversity benefits beyond the project itself.
By embedding ecology expertise early and reusing materials responsibly, we reduced environmental impact while delivering practical biodiversity improvements alongside programme delivery.
