Enhancing biodiversity and wellbeing on site

At Glenmor Yard on the Isle of Skye, an unused soil bund within the site compound was identified as an opportunity to enhance biodiversity while improving wellbeing for colleagues working on site.

A bund is a raised mound of stored soil or earth commonly created on construction sites when excavated material is piled up.

The bund in the site compound was transformed using a wildflower seed mix and habitat features designed to support pollinators and insects. A gazebo and seating area were installed nearby, creating a space where colleagues can take a break and connect with nature during the working day.

The initiative also supports local beekeeping activity, with the landowner welcoming the enhanced wildflower area for its benefits to pollination and biodiversity. The collaboration has strengthened relationships with the landowner while delivering environmental benefits beyond the project boundary.

The wildflower bund will be maintained throughout the lifecycle of the Skye project, continuing to provide a habitat for pollinators while remaining a valued wellbeing space for colleagues on site.
