Improving gender diversity through early careers
Early careers professionals can face barriers to developing the skills, confidence and networks needed to build careers in sustainability.
In September 2025, Balfour Beatty launched the Sprouting Sustainability Network to help address this challenge and future sustainability leaders across the business.
Originally developed by two early careers professionals and pitched to senior leadership, the programme has since evolved into a structured two‑year development journey built around six sustainability-focused modules.
The network combines tailored learning resources, interactive events and a peer community, helping participants build cross-business networks whiles developing practical sustainability knowledge.
Collaboration has been central to the programme’s design and delivery. Focus area leads co-develop each module, while external partners contribute expertise – including charities in Blackpool supporting the Community Engagement module.

Since launch, participants have begun building new connections, sharing insights and engaging more actively with Balfour Beatty’s sustainability strategy, Building New Futures.
By investing in early careers development, the network is helping strengthen sustainability capability across the business while supporting the next generation of leaders.
