Urban Fox, a partnership between Balfour Beatty Investments and Urban Electric Networks, are will be introducing the first wave of new on-street electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Newport from this week, with the full network set to be operational by 30th September 2025.
This follows the contract awarded to Urban Fox earlier this year by Newport City Council to deliver Wales’ first lamp post-based EV charging networks—a key milestone in Newport’s journey to becoming a cleaner, greener, more sustainable city.
A total of 120 chargepoints will be installed on residential streets across Newport, with many located directly on existing streetlamps. This approach maximises pavement space, enhances accessibility, and preserves the character of local neighbourhoods while providing essential charging options for EV drivers, particularly those without off-street parking.
Two types of chargers will be introduced as part of the rollout. Both chargepoints are designed for reliability and ease of use, both providing 5kW fast charging option, suitable for overnight charging. Both types of chargers will be easily located and accessed via the Urban Fox app, giving residents a simple, reliable way to find available chargers, start charging sessions, and manage payments – all from their smartphone.

Councillor Yvonne Forsey, Cabinet Member for Climate Change at Newport City Council, added: “I’m very pleased to see the first of our new charging points going live. They’re very straightforward to use and provide an innovative charging solution for those without access to off-street parking. It is important to us that we look at as many different ways as possible to expand the coverage of our charging network. This is so that as many of our residents as possible can benefit, should they wish to. I’d like to thank our climate change team and Urban Fox for the work they have done so far on these installations and look forward to seeing more chargers go live soon.”
The rollout forms part of Newport City Council's broader efforts to support residents and businesses in making low-carbon transport choices, in line with the council’s climate change commitments and Wales’ national Net Zero targets.
