Balfour Beatty has featured on Good Morning Britain, shining a light on the ongoing issue of roadworker abuse and the real impact it has on those working on the UK’s road network.

During the live broadcast, Balfour Beatty’s Reactive Maintenance Supervisor, Brenton McLean, spoke openly about his personal experiences of abuse while carrying out essential work on site, highlighting the reality faced by roadworkers across the industry.

The segment also highlighted Balfour Beatty data, which shows the company records an average of three incidents of roadworker abuse every day, equating to more than 1,100 incidents each year. These incidents range from verbal abuse and intimidation to dangerous behaviour from road users, underlining the scale and seriousness of the issue.

Speaking on what Balfour Beatty has in place to support its workers, Brenton said: "Balfour Beatty has given us body-worn cameras, which has really helped, which captures any kind of evidence and we can forward on to the police."

Debbie Turner, Balfour Beatty’s Reactive Maintenance Supervisor East, was also featured during the News Bulletin of the show, further reinforcing the scale of the issue and the impact it has on frontline workers across the business. Talking about her experiences of abuse, Debbie said: "she was inches away from my face accusing me of throwing stone all over her footway and why had I done it. She wouldn't even let me speak. I was trying to explain to her that I was there to help."

Balfour Beatty continues to work with industry partners, clients and stakeholders to raise awareness of roadworker abuse and to support measures that better protect frontline workers, who play a vital role in keeping the UK’s roads safe and moving.
