Balfour Beatty gets to work on the North Hykeham Relief Road

17 March 2026

UK

Balfour Beatty today announces that it officially started work on the £138 million North Hykeham Relief Road – following its appointment as Preferred Bidder by Lincolnshire County Council in 2022.

The project will see Balfour Beatty construct a new dual carriageway linking the A46 Pennells Roundabout to the Lincoln Eastern Bypass as well as two new bridges at Station Road and over the River Witham.

Since its appointment as Preferred Bidder, the company has worked closely and collaboratively with Lincolnshire County Council to progress the detailed design development, early works planning, site mobilisation and coordination of enabling activities to prepare the route for full construction.

Once complete, the scheme will play a vital role in easing congestion in and around North Hykeham and Lincoln, improving journey reliability and unlocking access to essential new housing developments.

Kay Slade, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Regional Civils business said: “This is a significant milestone for the North Hykeham Relief Road project, reflecting several years of close collaboration to get this complex scheme to the point where construction can now begin.

“Early engagement with Lincolnshire County Council and key partners has been critical in shaping a deliverable solution, and we’re proud to now be moving forward into the main works phase on a project that will create employment opportunities and deliver lasting benefits for local communities and the wider county.”

Main construction will commence in May 2026 with completion expected in 2029 and at peak, the project will employ a workforce of 300 including 30 graduate and apprentices.
