Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, today announces its 50:50 Far East joint venture, Gammon Construction, has been awarded the c. HK$2.3 billion (c. £223.2 million) Sai Sha Road widening project in a 50:50 joint venture with Sanfield (Management) Ltd. by Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd for its development project in Shap Sze Heung, Sai Kung, Hong Kong.
The works involve widening a section of the current road from two lanes to dual two lanes, development of a cycling track, installation of noise barriers, implementation of greening works to compensate for trees affected by the project, construction of three footbridges and extensive water and sewage utility provisions including two pumping stations; and, the installation of sewage pipes by Tunnel Boring Machine along the existing roads 2.1km north of the project to the Ma On Shan area.
Gammon has developed a long-standing partnership with Sun Hung Kai Properties through previous projects including: The management contract for Phase 2 of Ocean Shores residential project in Hong Kong; and, has worked closely with the developer to determine the buildability, programme management and cost plan establishment of the project. Additionally a comprehensive set of key risk factors and mitigation measures have been identified within Gammon’s Zero Harm framework to ensure works are completed both safely and sustainably.
A range of innovative solutions will be deployed on the project including: 4D Building Information Modelling for the construction of the pumping station, and the exploration of using offsite modular construction techniques on the Electrical and Mechanical works. Other innovative solutions will include Drone and 3D land surveying techniques to monitor the 4.1km-long site area to maintain instant and reliable project progress records.

Upon completion, Sai Sha Road will be wider, more spacious and safer with the risk of flooding eliminated.
Works commenced in July 2018, with project completion expected in 2023. An estimated workforce of approximately 600 will be engaged during the peak construction period.
