About the role

At Balfour Beatty, we’re delivering the infrastructure that will help power the UK’s future. As we continue to support the development of critical energy infrastructure, we’re looking for an experienced Design Manager to join our Regional Civils Design & Engineering team, supporting projects across the Energy and Power Transmission sector.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering major energy infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on high-voltage transmission and distribution works. You’ll lead the management, coordination and assurance of multidisciplinary design, working closely with colleagues, clients, consultants and supply chain partners to ensure designs are safe, compliant, buildable and delivered to the highest standards.

From early-stage work winning and feasibility through to detailed design, construction, commissioning and handover, you’ll have the opportunity to influence projects at every stage, helping shape effective engineering solutions that support the UK’s energy transition

What you'll be doing

As a Design Manager you will:

  • Support work winning, feasibility studies and Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), providing technical expertise and identifying opportunities to improve design efficiency, value and buildability.

  • Manage the design process from concept development and detailed design through procurement, construction, commissioning and final handover.

  • Coordinate interfaces across civil, structural, building, geotechnical, drainage, utilities and temporary works disciplines, alongside mechanical and electrical requirements.

  • Work collaboratively with clients, designers, consultants, subcontractors and internal project teams to ensure design deliverables meet project needs.

Who we're looking for

You will have the following:

  • Proven experience in a Design Manager or similar design leadership role within civil engineering, infrastructure or the energy sector.

  • Experience working on major infrastructure projects, ideally within high-voltage transmission and distribution, substations, grid connections or related energy infrastructure.

  • A strong understanding of multidisciplinary design coordination, design assurance and technical governance.

  • Experience managing design development from early contractor involvement and feasibility through to construction and handover.

  • Knowledge of relevant civil, structural and infrastructure engineering disciplines, including their interfaces with mechanical and electrical systems.

  • The ability to identify design risks, challenge proposals constructively and develop practical, buildable solutions.
