About the role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D are looking for a Technical Clerk (Design &Engineering) to join thier exciting team in Derby.


The Technical Clerk is responsible for controlling and maintaining the Engineering Departments library of standards and specifications.


Role purpose:


Provide guidance, based on the Clients specification, on the latest engineering and design standards required for the various engineering disciplines required to deliver projects by the Balfour Beatty design teams.


The Technical Clerk will need to be familiar with the range of client standards, those published by national and international standards bodies and source all current and previous standards whenever necessary.


The Technical Clerk will not only liaise with design teams but also be engaged at the tendering stages of projects to ensure that design teams are briefed to the anticipated standards (with future updates) to be followed on a project.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:



  • Ensure availability of all design and engineering standards required to deliver PT&D project deliverables.

  • Ensure the availability/access to of Balfour Beatty PT&D’s clients’ design and engineering standards and those published by national and international standards bodies

  • Optimise the sourcing of all design and engineering standards to maximise financial return.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Support the design teams of all disciplines (Substations, Overhead Lines, Structures, High Voltage Cabling and Civils) in understanding the design and engineering standards applicable for each of the deliverable design packages.

  • Closely collaborate with Chief Engineers, Designers and Design Delivery Managers to ensure availability or access to design and engineering standards including those of Balfour Beatty clients.

  • Engage with Bid teams to ensure that project design and engineering standards applicable to the project are understood in advance of the project commencing.

  • Optimise the sourcing of all design and engineering standards from a cost perspective

  • Develop and maintain a library of design and engineering standards with the support of the Chief Engineers from each engineering discipline.

Who we're looking for

Skills Required:



  • Engineering/Science based education with good organisational skills.

  • Experience in the engineering and design sector

  • IT Literate (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Sharepoint, Teams, Power BI ETC.)

  • Experience in the power industry (preferred)

  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritise workload

  • Ability to work to & within processes and procedures

  • Ability to extract information from Subject Matter Experts as required

  • Flexible outlook

  • Ability to interrogate contract specifications and documents to extract the pertinent information relating to standards and disseminate as appropriate
