What you'll be doing
As Tunnel Maintenance Civil Operative, you will report to the Tunnel Maintenance Manager and support the effective delivery of maintenance operations across the network. You will oversee the correct operation of tunnel vehicles when used by appointed agency drivers, ensuring that all required checks are completed before and after use.
You will drive tunnel vehicles when required during planned closures or reactive incidents and assist Tunnel Maintenance Technicians in completing a wide range of maintenance activities. This will include supporting inspections, repairs, and general upkeep of tunnel and pumping station assets.
You will be responsible for completing daily worksheets, maintenance reports, drive-through sheets, and vehicle checks, ensuring that all records are accurate and submitted on time. You will observe all safety procedures and instructions, maintaining a strong focus on Zero Harm at all times.
The role includes providing escort and supervision to subcontractors, ensuring full compliance with site rules and safety standards, and supporting work delivered on behalf of National Highways and partner organisations.
You will carry out manual, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks across a range of trades, including out-of-trade activities when required, under the direction of the Tunnel Maintenance Supervisor. You will also support wider business objectives, including sustainability initiatives, and undertake any reasonable duties within your capability as directed by line management.
Who we're looking for
You will hold relevant operational and safety qualifications, including IPAF certification for MEWPs and booms, confined space training, and a valid CSCS Safety Card or equivalent. You will have broad experience of tunnel maintenance regimes and a good understanding of current health and safety legislation.
You will be capable of working independently when required, operating Connect Plus Services vehicles in line with company policies, and undertaking additional training to meet sector scheme requirements, including Sector 22. Experience working in high-risk operational environments will be beneficial.
You will demonstrate strong customer service skills, the ability to work effectively under pressure, and a confident and professional approach. You will communicate clearly at all levels and work collaboratively within a complex operational structure.
You will be a reliable team player with a thorough and organised working style. A clean UK driving licence is essential, and applicants holding HGV Class 1 or 2 licences and a valid CPC Driver Card will be particularly well regarded.
