What you'll be doing

As a HGV Vehicle Technician you will have the following accountabilities:


Job Purpose



  • Perform servicing, repairs, and diagnostic work on a wide range of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and specialist commercial vehicles as a mobile technician

  • Maintain the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance across all workshop and mobile activities


Key Responsibilities



  • Deliver exceptional standards of workmanship on all service, maintenance, and repair tasks

  • Step up to coordinate workshop/mobile activities in the absence of the Workshop Supervisor or Manager

  • Provide high-quality mobile and workshop-based servicing and repairs on cars, light commercial vehicles, HGVs, and specialist vehicles

  • Complete mandatory scheduled inspections, testing, and calibration of all workshop equipment and tools

  • Conduct and document safety checks, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and COSHH assessments

  • Drive efficient and cost-effective operation of the mobile/technical department

  • Consistently exceed customer expectations through proactive communication and outstanding service

  • Ensure a safe system of work is always followed in full compliance with company health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures


What Good Looks Like (Performance Indicators)



  • High fitter productivity and minimal vehicle downtime reflected in monthly reports

  • Zero or minimal customer complaints, consistently low VOR (vehicle off road) status, and excellent quality of  maintenance/repair work

  • Up-to-date inspection date register with all certificates current

  • Fully maintained health & safety files, including briefing records, risk assessments, and near-miss reports

  • Timely and accurate completion of all job cards, paperwork, and administrative tasks

  • Regular positive customer feedback and commendations

  • Zero accidents (AFR = 0), zero lost-time incidents (LTIR = 0), and proactive near-miss reporting

Who we're looking for

Knowledge, Skills and Experience



  • Relevant City & Guilds qualification (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance/Repair, or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of technical skill and competence through experience

  • Solid understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices in a workshop and roadside environment

  • Competent in the use of basic computer systems and diagnostic tools/equipment


Essential Requirements



  • Full Category C (Class 2) HGV driving licence (clean or with minimal points preferred)

  • Proven experience in winter maintenance operations (gritting, snow clearance, winter patrol, etc.)

  • Strong customer-focused approach with excellent communication and interpersonal skills


Desirable Requirements



  • Current Driver CPC qualification

  • Specialist knowledge of municipal or specialist vehicles (e.g. refuse collection vehicles, gritters, sweepers, tippers, or similar)
