Transmission and distribution

Transmission and distribution

Balfour Beatty’s power transmission and distribution teams work with regional, national and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions.

With experience and expertise across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cable tunnels and distribution networks, we deliver a range of proactive and reactive services which support a reliable and safe supply of power flowing to millions of homes and businesses around the world.

From scoping and feasibility, to design, construction and on-going maintenance, our in-house experts, flexible resources and industry-leading innovations support customers in the development of some of the world’s most ambitious power transmission and distribution projects.

Against a background of rising population growth, increasing energy consumption and growing environmental concerns, our customers recognise the vital importance of a power network that delivers electricity to millions of consumers safely, reliably and economically and that is capable of meeting future demand.

We are one of only a few specialist providers with the ability to operate across the transmission and distribution spectrum from Low Voltage (LV) to Extra High Voltage (EHV), with a special focus on 132kV to 400kV. We provide a portfolio of services that includes the ability to assess scheme feasibility and scope the detailed requirements of a contract in advance of design and construction.

Fibre optic solutions

As the world accelerates towards a potential population of over ten billion by 2050, access to reliable communications to support quality of life and enable economic prosperity will become ever more critical. Scalable communications mediums will be vital as the need to reduce emissions caused by transport increases year on year.

We support cuthroughout the infrastructure management lifecycle, from project design, management, engineering, construction, through to ongoing maintenance. A key strength is the ability to bring these services together in any combination to provide a bespoke and integrated service for our customers.

Our ability to provide an end to end solution for fibre optic assets from installation to repair and maintenance can be a major benefit to organisations seeking to manage their network assets in a cost efficient and sustainable manner.

Funding and asset ownership

Through our in-house funding capability, we provide project equity with a core expertise of structuring and raising competitive debt finance from the market to develop and operate infrastructure.

Operating in the UK, US, Canada, India, Australia and South East-Asia, we hold the largest portfolio of PFI and PPP projects of any contractor in the UK and have expertise in delivering projects on an international basis.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Partners are an operator led infrastructure investment firm who takes on the ownership of existing assets, developing and enhancing them where appropriate.

Providing investment advisory services to investors in infrastructure assets in Europe and North America, the team focus on energy, transport and utilities.

Our specialist team provides engineering-led solutions for the operation, maintenance and construction of offshore renewable energy networks.

Covering both the onshore and offshore high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) assets we deliver across long-term operation and maintenance contracts, installation EPC and responsive repair frameworks. Our approach is built on in-house engineering and project management expertise, coupled with specialist supply chain capabilities to deliver a fully integrated solution from engineering to procurement, and construction through to management.

With a long heritage in power transmission and distribution delivery, we operate and maintain transmission assets on behalf of asset owners, working under annual maintenance contracts covering substations, converters and transmission cables and general repairs and faults. We also provide integrated asset management services, including subsea surveys, condition assessments, planned maintenance and inspections, fault identification and monitoring.

For installation projects we provide the specialist skills needed to construct and lay cables on and offshore including near-shore works such as horizontal directional drilling and undertaking all aspects of cable jointing and terminations. We have unrivalled access to HV and EHV jointers through our leading presence in the European HV and EHV transmission and distribution market.

Working in collaboration with our partners, we draw on a network of specialists’ expertise and skills to provide industry leading delivery solutions.

Overhead lines

Against a background of rising population growth, increasing energy consumption and growing environmental concerns, our customers recognise the vital importance of a modernised power network; creating opportunities for harnessing renewable energy resources and delivering sustainable electricity supply to millions of consumers safely, reliably and economically.

Innovation is changing the way in which electricity is generated and where it is created. ‘Smart grids’ that anticipate future changes and provide network operators with increased flexibility will define investment strategies.

The construction, refurbishment and maintenance of overhead transmission lines is benefiting from our excellence in engineering innovation to radically improve safety and reduce time spent onsite.

Our role, as one of the world’s leaders in overhead line transmission design, construction and maintenance, is to help our customers make the right decisions and deliver their investment plans to the highest standard.

With specialist expertise in control and protection systems, our substations team is one of the leading high voltage substation suppliers in the UK. Supported by in-house design and programme management expertise, we manufacture, install, test and commission extra high voltage (EHV) and high voltage (HV) substations, including all associated civil work.

As a specialist substation systems integrator, we have the flexibility to offer switchgear and automation products from a range of manufacturers, supporting bespoke project requirements.

We deliver a range of projects under EPC and other contract forms, including control and protection panels, substation computer control systems, and aluminium & steel switchgear support structures, continually investing and developing the engineering expertise of our teams.
