Balfour Beatty Construction has been selected as the general contractor for Onslow Memorial Hospital’s new Wound Care Center, which will offer advanced hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients whose wounds are resistant to traditional forms of treatment. Onslow Memorial Hospital is an acute care, community hospital located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, which serves the greater Onslow County area.
Balfour Beatty Construction will perform selective demolition and new construction work to convert part of an 11,321-square-foot, single-story medical office building into a state-of-the-art Wound Care Center. The 3,750-square-foot Wound Care Center will include two new hyperbaric chambers and is being constructed to accommodate the addition of two additional chambers.
A hyperbaric chamber allows patients to receive treatment in an oxygen-rich environment, which reduces pain and expedites the healing process for exterior wounds resulting from burns, diabetes, circulatory problems and other serious medical conditions.
The scope of work includes a 60 kilowatt emergency generator, 3,500 CFM air handling unit, bulk oxygen tank and medical gas storage area. Balfour Beatty Construction will also retrofit the entire building’s fire protection systems.
“With this addition, Onslow Memorial Hospital patients will have access to first-rate wound healing treatment conveniently located within their community,” said Mike Baumbach, senior vice president and healthcare business unit leader for Balfour Beatty Construction. “This will be a center of excellence for specialised wound care and hyperbaric medicine in Eastern North Carolina.”
The design team is led by Charlotte-based architecture firm, Wilkerson Associates. Construction on this highly specialised, fast-track project began on January 2 and is expected to complete in late March.
This is the second project Onslow Memorial Hospital has awarded Balfour Beatty Construction within the past six months. Onslow Memorial Hospital also engaged Balfour Beatty Construction to provide preconstruction services for proposed renovations to its Emergency Department and surgery pavilion. A construction start date for that project has not yet been identified.
Balfour Beatty Construction has a strong, regional presence in Eastern North Carolina. In addition to the Wound Care Center, the company is currently active on several landmark projects, including renovations to Albert J. Ellis Airport in Richlands, North Carolina as well as new construction work on soldiers’ quarters at Camp Lejeune, located in the nearby city of Jacksonville.
Consistently ranked as a leading healthcare builder by Modern Healthcare and ENR, Balfour Beatty Construction has helped clients to realise their visions for new, renovated and expanded healthcare facilities for nearly 80 years.
