Nick Rowan, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s business in Scotland, has shared his thoughts in The Scotsman on how Scotland’s transition to renewable energy is creating opportunities for people, businesses and communities across the country.
In the article, he highlights how major investment in energy infrastructure, including SSEN Transmission’s £29 billion programme to upgrade the transmission network across the north of Scotland, is creating skilled jobs, supporting local economies and giving more people the opportunity to build rewarding careers closer to home.
He also highlights that Balfour Beatty has recruited more than 1,000 people across Scotland since 2023 to deliver energy projects, including more than 100 graduates and apprentices. Importantly, many of these opportunities are enabling people to return to their roots, relocate to rural Scotland and build long-term careers in the communities they call home.
Finally, he outlines why creating a lasting legacy must remain a key part of Scotland’s energy transition, and the role infrastructure investment can play in supporting local businesses, developing future talent and ensuring communities share in the long-term benefits of the projects being delivered around them.
