Balfour Beatty features in Construction News discussing the importance of school outreach

Jo Gilroy, Balfour Beatty’s Group Director of Sustainability, has featured in Construction News discussing the importance of sector collaboration in school outreach.

Following Balfour Beatty’s pledge to support a new school outreach initiative earlier this month, Jo talks through the challenges and opportunities facing the industry, and how collaboration across the sector will help attract and retain the next generation of talent.

According to the School Outreach Company, the company co-ordinating the sector-wide initiative, over 65% of those currently in education do not understand the skills employers are looking for.

Discussing the Group’s pledge and long-term strategy, Jo said: “The first step in solving a problem is recognising that you have one. As an industry, we are currently competing against everyone else for the future talent…Whether we’ve got talent that comes and works for us, or works for a competitor or works for one of our subcontractors, at some point in time, we’re all going to be working together on a particular project. So the benefit is mutual.”
