Balfour Beatty supports sporting stars at biggest ever Balfour Beatty London Youth Games

6 July 2015

UK

Thousands of youngsters from across London came together in Crystal Palace to celebrate the culmination of the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games during the finals weekend (4 and 5 July).

The annual youth sports event, which has been sponsored by Balfour Beatty since 2006, saw over 125,000 young Londoners from all 33 London boroughs compete in what is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event.

After competing in more than 30 sports including cross country, judo, volleyball and archery, once again, youngsters from Wandsworth Borough secured first place and were this weekend crowned the sporting champions of London for the third year running.

Wandsworth collected the Jubilee Trophy, as every winner has since the Games launched in 1977, to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee ahead of Richmond who came second and Bexley who were placed third.

Around 15,000 young Londoners aged between 8 and 18-years-old competed at the finals weekend following in the hallowed footprints of Olympic champions such as Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu, England footballers Rio Ferdinand and Raheem Sterling and one million others who have taken part since the first ever London Youth Games in 1977.
Paul Toyne, Balfour Beatty Group Sustainability Director said:

“The atmosphere over the weekend has been fantastic and the competitive spirit amongst all of the London boroughs has been delightful to watch.

“Balfour Beatty’s sponsorship of the London Youth Games has this year given 125,000 school children the opportunity to be involved in 31 different competitive sport activities. This year was the biggest games ever so far and we are delighted to have helped make it happen.”
