Balfour Beatty was recognised this week for its commitment to sustainability, securing seven awards at the prestigious Green Apple Awards at The Houses of Parliament and an additional prize for Construction Project of The Year at the Construction, Quarry and Recycling awards in Northern Ireland.
The Green Apple Awards seek to distinguish, reward and encourage best environmental practice around the world.
Balfour Beatty’s work on the Perth Transport Futures Project on behalf of Perth & Kinross Council and in collaboration with Scape Group was recognised for its significant number of social, economic and environmental initiatives, securing the Scotland Green Champion Award. While the company’s joint venture with VINCI took home a Gold Award for its innovative approach to sustainable highways works when transforming the M6 junction 2-4 to a SMART motorway.
The Springhead Bridge Scheme was awarded a Bronze award for overall Carbon Reduction on the Great Yellow Bumblebee Habitat Enhancement project in Ebbsfleet. Additionally, the South Wales overhead line refurbishment works scheme secured the Environmental Best Practice award, where the team safely removed more than 20 birds’ nests to prevent them from being destroyed.
The United Utilities Advance project claimed a Bronze award for its innovative construction of the new water treatment at the Lake District National Park. In addition, Balfour Beatty’s Bradford West to Elland overhead line route project was awarded a Green World Ambassador trophy for finding alternative solutions for protecting local wildlife.
Balfour Beatty also secured the Environmental Best Practice award for its innovative recycling techniques on the A285 road safety scheme, on behalf of West Sussex City Council. The scheme recycled approximately 8,000 tonnes of material, significantly reduced overall waste, disposal costs and environmental impact.
To complete the winning streak, Balfour Beatty won Construction Project of the Year prize at the Construction, Quarry and Recycling awards in Northern Ireland, for working at the highest standards of quality and safety.
These awards are testament to Balfour Beatty’s approach to delivering sustainable solutions across its projects.
