High Speed 2 (HS2) will dramatically increase Britain’s rail capacity and shape the future of rail travel.

This new railway will transform Britain: driving regeneration, jobs and growth, and introducing new skills for people at all levels in multiple industries.

Balfour Beatty, along with our joint venture partner company VINCI, has recently been awarded two contracts on the HS2 project route, worth a total of c. £2.5 billion. We will design and build two key stages of the new high speed line and we are looking for a wide range of experts to join the team and support this unique, groundbreaking project.

The first stage, a 16-month Early Contract Involvement (ECI) period, began on 28 July 2017 with construction starting in early 2019.

Please note that all roles will be based out of Birmingham.

Project information

Both contracts involve design and major civil engineering works including bored tunnelling, ground stabilisation and treatment, major earthworks and significant bridges and structures work.

Lot N1

The N1 Lot extends from near Leamington Spa to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham and includes a complex junction south-east of Birmingham (known as Delta Junction) and the Birmingham spur into Curzon Street. It is valued at around £1.32bn.
The N1 section presents a variety of engineering challenges as it passes through undulating countryside requiring tunnelling and numerous cuttings, embankments, viaducts and highway diversions.
The Birmingham Spur is particularly complex, including a twin bored tunnel totalling 4.5km, a 1.2km diversion of the Tame River and a viaduct through a nature reserve running adjacent to the Birmingham and Derby rail lines. The route must also make its way overland through Birmingham's industrial area into the city centre.

Lot N2

Lot N2 extends from the Delta Junction to the West Coast Main Line tie-in near Lichfield and is valued at around £1.15bn. It consists of 50km of track in a mainly rural setting. The Delta Junction consists of numerous viaducts crossing over the M6 and M42.
The route to the north of the Delta Junction consists of very complex structures and earthworks, with embankments and cuttings and several viaducts crossing natural watercourses and canals.
