About the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Renewals Manager to join our Rail team working across the North West as part of the Central Rail Systems Alliance (CRSA).

Bringing together knowledge and experience in critical rail infrastructure and track renewals, the alliance deploys innovative working methods to realise efficiencies and create a more reliable railway infrastructure.


Role purpose: To assist the Renewals Manager in the management of all aspects of assigned works within the contract and contribute to development and take ownership of assigned works from Development Stage. Ensure assigned works are delivered in compliance with all relevant Safety Legislation, group standards & network rail standards and to the correct specification to the agreed target costs. To take a primary lead in the management of the Technical Engineering resource within the delivery team.

What you'll be doing

The successful candidate will: 





  • Assist the renewals manager in the detailed planning and execution of Track Renewals Works as allocated;

  • Assist the renewals manager in planning and directing the activities of Senior Supervisors and Senior Engineers;

  • Undertake deputy contractors responsible engineer (CRE) duties;

  • Develop track and drainage designs with a constructability focus;

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Safety Legislation and Welfare Regulations;

  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures;

  • Be responsible for ensuring all works undertaken comply with contract specifications;

  • Identify risks and opportunities within the programme and lead the promotion of sharing best practices;

  • Monitor the delivery plan of the production team so that it considers cross-programme requirements;

  • Manage and monitor the execution of works throughout the life cycle of the project and are delivered within the agreed target costs;

  • Continually review working practices, utilisation of resources and technical innovations to ensure the cost-effective delivery of the contract;

  • Assist the renewals manager, CEM and CRE to ensure works are undertaken by competent staff and assist in competency management procedure.



Who we're looking for

The successful candidate will have the following qualities/experience: 


Essential: 



  • A strong Engineering CRE background;

  • Extensive knowledge of track renewal processes in both S&C and plain line, operational railway and associated  safety matters including Construction, Design Management (CDM);

  • Technical qualifications to at least HNC level or equivalent;

  • Risk assessment, auditing internal and external competency;

  • Knowledge of safety & Environmental management and quality assurance;

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills;

  • Experience within a management post;

  • PTS;

  • Ability to drive.


Important skills:



  • Team player with willingness to learn, challenge and be involved;

  • Computer literacy;

  • Able to decide, formulate and communicate policy;

  • Adopts a logical and decisive approach to decision making and impact.


Desirable: 



  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (or working towards);

  • IOSH/NEBOSH;

  • IEMA;

  • Accident investigation experience.
