About the role

Balfour Beatty is hiring for a Commissioning Manager to join our Substations Power Transmission & Distribution team in the North East of England. Candidates should have tender experience in substation commissioning, working on projects ranging from GBP2 million to GBP60 million.


Travel to the office is required, with flexible working options available due to UK-wide projects.

What you'll be doing


  • To aid management of the commissioning department, comprising of commissioning engineers, technicians, trainees and support, together with management and supervision of sub-contracted commissioning companies and contracts.

  • To deliver during the tendering phase of substation projects, detailed commissioning costbuild up and hours to determine tendering commissioning cost.

  • To be the Power T&D business.

  • Include Go to person for Commissioning technical help and support to design and operations.

  • To have a thorough knowledge of Transmission commissioning requirements for National Gird for all type of equipment employed.

  • Ensuring that commissioning departments are adhering to the technical commissioning requirements, provide technical advice and guidance for the substation programme scope (from Early contractor Involvement, tendering through to project handover and completion) to ensure commissioning tender budgets are adhered to.

  • Provide Guidance and advice on the current and future allocation of commissioning resources (three months ahead to a year ahead) as required in line with key programmed date requirements and with central resources profiles.


Who we're looking for


  • Relevant substation operational experience with previous Commissioning Authorisations

  • Evidence and understanding of National Grids current commissioning procedures.

  • Demonstratable knowledge of National Grid Substation Commissioning requirements

  • HNC minimal qualification.

  • Experience of managing a remote technical team (direct reports and sub-contractors)

  • Understanding of Industry Quality Documentation requirements
