About the role

Balfour Beatty are recruiting for Cable Designs Engineer to join the Power Transmission and Distribution team.


Positions throughout England and Scotland.


We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.


Under the instruction of the Cabling Lead Design Engineers, focus will be on:-



  • carrying out the system design for all BB Power T&D Core work tender enquiries and projects, in accordance with Balfour Beatty Design Procedure, National Grid and DNO procedures, and standard design rules and procedures as defined by the Cabling Design Delivery Manager.

  • Assist the Cabling Lead Design Engineers in delivering the allocated scope of works to programme, budget and quality.

  • Embed Safety, Constructability and Sustainability by Design in all designs.

What you'll be doing


  • Review tender or contract documentation and establish the scope of works.

  • Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, customer requirements and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.



  • Design optimized cable routes in line with client/stakeholder specifications and ground conditions

  • Calculate cable conductor size and type and perform cable rating calculations in line with IEC60287

  • Prepare complete cable system design technical documentation including, but not limited to, Current Rating Reports, Material Schedules (BOQ), System Design Summary, Risk Register and Installation Methodology Report.

  • Produce cable pulling tensions calculations to prove cable routes and designs are achievable.

  • Design and mark-up drawings including, but not limited to, Sheath Bonding Line Diagrams, Cable Trench Cross Sections, Detailed Route Layout, Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Plans, Cable Termination GA’s, Cable Sealing End Compound Layouts & Elevations.

  • Work to carry out thermal resistivity and density testing on sand, sand/ gravel and cement bound sand(CBS) samples for cabling projects across the company.

  • Conduct site visits as necessary, to determine and approve routes and setups to install all types of HV cables. This will include, but is not limited to, identifying hazards, risks, easements and cable installation parameters.

  • Use AutoCAD and other cabling software packages to develop and assess cable installation scenarios and verify existing designs where applicable



  • Practice Safety, Constructability and Sustainability by Design on all projects, ensuring compliance with the H&SAWA and latest CDM Regulations.

  • Maintain an up to date risk register, with particular emphasis on the identification of risks and hazards at the design stage and where possible providing mitigation at the design stage (zero by design).

  • Support the Cabling Lead Design Engineers and work on the resolution of design challenges in collaboration with the site operations team, client and other disciplines, as required.

  • Support improvements works within the team and projects.

Who we're looking for


  • A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).

  • Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry (desirable).

  • Experience in the design of complete HVAC (essential) and HVDC cable systems (desirable).

  • Experience in designing HV cable systems ranging from 11kV to 400kV (desirable).

  • Understanding of industry HV cable installation standards and specifications (desirable).



  • Experience in the use of CYMCAP software to support cable system design, or alternative current rating software (desirable).



  • Ability to take the initiative, demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities, problems and one self.

  • Ability to both write and understand technical documents relating to all aspects of cabling and HV cable systems

  • Ability to prioritise workloads in a proactive and organised fashion (using software tools as necessary) to ensure key deadlines are met and reliant parties are kept informed.

  • Willingness to travel as per project or client needs
