Local heroes shortlisted for Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Awards

21 September 2012

UK

Representatives from ten London boroughs have been shortlisted for prizes at this year’s Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Hall of Fame and Annual Awards Evening. The prestigious ceremony will take place at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Tuesday, 9 October, exactly one month after the conclusion of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games provides a valuable stepping-stone in the careers of many of London’s most successful athletes, including 43 of this year’s competitors from Team and Paralympic GB. The event will celebrate their achievements, alongside those of individuals and organisations who contributed to the huge success of this year’s competition. Recent Hall of Fame inductees include double Olympic champion Mo Farah, quadruple Paralympic champion David Weir and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins. Six more British superstars will be confirmed as inductees on the evening.

An audience of around 400 guests is expected to include senior London and UK politicians, some stars of London 2012 and representatives of London boroughs and sporting governing bodies.

The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event, featuring teams from 33 London boroughs taking part in 80 competitions across 30 sports on 25 event days. Croydon collected the Jubilee Trophy as the overall winning borough in 2012, ahead of Wandsworth and Enfield.

London Youth Games Chairman, Anthony Kendall, said:  “2012 has been a monumental year for London sport and the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games has played a major role in ensuring that high-profile success at elite level has been mirrored at grass roots development level.

“At our Hall of Fame and Annual Awards we are set to announce the highest number of participants and highest number of volunteers in our 35 year history from the 2012 London Youth Games.

“There is now an unprecedented level of enthusiasm around competitive sport and volunteering from young Londoners. Through the London Youth Games they are not only enhancing their own lifestyles, but making a positive contribution to their local communities.

“The Hall of Fame and Annual Awards evening is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the incredible sporting legacy we are creating in London, be it elite athletes who have graduated from the London Youth Games to Olympic medals, increased participation in competitive sport or more qualified volunteers and officials.

“Congratulations to all the individuals and organisations who have made the 2012 London Youth Games the greatest ever, particularly to those shortlisted for awards for their unique contribution to all of our successes.”

Balfour Beatty Volunteer of the Year

We are delighted that well over 100 Balfour Beatty employees volunteered to help ensure the success of this year’s Games, and one of the awards will recognise the employee who has made the greatest voluntary contribution. Nominees include:

Nicky Boyce (Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering)
A real enthusiast who helped deliver multiple competitions and support other volunteers throughout finals week where he worked across swimming, rugby and athletics.

Paul Butterworth (Balfour Beatty WorkPlace)
A first time volunteer to the London Youth Games. A qualified football referee, he volunteered his services over three days of competitions at finals week where his impressive officiating led him to being selected to referee the final match.

Sharon Cox (Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering)
Volunteered her services at finals weekend in the triathlon competition. Internally, she has been working on increasing the volunteering activity within Balfour Beatty and incorporating volunteering as part of staff’s professional development.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers and to wish those shortlisted the very best of luck.
