Balfour Beatty appointed preferred bidder for the £47 million NHS Ayrshire & Arran Community Hospital Project

27 February 2014

UK

Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, announces today that it has been appointed preferred bidder by NHS Ayrshire & Arran for the £47 million Acute Mental Health and Community Hospital project.

The project comprises a new 206 bedroom integrated mental health and community hospital, bringing together a comprehensive range of outpatient and in-patient facilities on the Ayrshire Central Hospital site, Irvine. The development is being funded using the Scottish Government’s Non-Profit Distributing (NPD) Model.

Balfour Beatty will finance, design and construct the project, which is expected to reach financial close in Q3 2014.

Derek Lindsay, NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Director of Finance and Senior Responsible Officer for the project, said: “After a robust procurement process, we are confident that we have made the right decision. Balfour Beatty’s final tender offers a high quality design and therapeutic environment. We are looking forward to working with them to provide the people of Ayrshire and Arran the very best facility possible.”

Balfour Beatty Chief Executive, Andrew McNaughton, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this NPD healthcare project in Scotland. Balfour Beatty has delivered £2 billion worth of healthcare facilities in the past decade, including over 800 mental health beds and 3,000 acute beds.  In recent years we have become a leader in the healthcare PPP market in the UK coupled with substantial experience in the construction of major hospital facilities in the US. We have transferred these skills to leverage opportunities in adjacent markets such as Canada.”
