On 30 June a team of 12 from Balfour Beatty Capital took part in the ‘Round the Island Race’ circumnavigating the Isle of Wight, in competition with 2,000 other boats.
They sailed in a 110-year-old gaff schooner, the ‘Coral of Cowes’ who was racing in UK waters for the first time since the 1930s having spent most of her life in South Africa and the Caribbean.
The team completed the race in eight hours and was first home in their class; they were awarded the prestigious Shamrock Challenge Cup by Dame Ellen Macarthur, the solo long-distance yachtswoman.
Building Better Futures’ goal is to help improve the motivation, aspirations, quality of life and achievement levels of young people, particularly those suffering from disadvantage.
