Encouraging development in US transportation funding

A news release from Congressman Mica, Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, reported some encouraging news yesterday on the authorisation of a Surface Transportation Bill. While still not final, the Bill keeps programmes at current funding levels through the end of fiscal year 2014 (30 September 2014), which is a longer period than the Bill that the Senate was proposing which would have been a 15-month bill. The longer term is expected to increase visibility and security of funding for the states to start some of their major projects.
The latest goal is to bring the conference report to the House and Senate floors for final approval before COB Friday when Congress is scheduled to leave for the July 4th recess, or by midnight on Saturday when the current short-term extension expires. Many still believe that there is not enough time to logistically pass the bill by then and that a potential two-week+ mini-extension will be needed to wrap up loose ends; but others, particularly Chairman Boxer, are determined to pass it by 30 June.
