SM 2012 - Gammon Butterfly

Staff at Gammon Construction in Hong Kong will be celebrating a year’s support for the famous Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, near Tai Po on 26 May.
Over the course of the year Gammon has donated materials and labour to ensure that essential work at the reserve could be completed. This has included the contribution of excess concrete leftover from construction sites and a team of willing volunteers to help lay the paths throughout the reserve.
In light of Balfour Beatty’s Sustainability Month, 52 Gammon employees participated in 6 half-day path-laying sessions - amounting to 330 hours of volunteering, while 5 frontline staff volunteered to spend 102 hours producing concrete pavers. The Concrete Department produced 204 pavers by reusing 12 tons of concrete waste from sites.
Not only has this project reduced waste and helped to recycle materials it has also given valuable experience to young engineers at Gammon.
