- Balfour Beatty Capital was awarded the 40-year, £553 million contract, for the new Birmingham Acute and Adult Psychiatric Hospitals.
- It’s the first new general hospital in Birmingham for 70 years and the largest community healthcare development outside London.
- The PPP (also known as PFI) contract involves the design, construction, financing, maintenance and management of the lifecycle replacement of the new hospitals.
- The concession is for 35 years, following completion of the five-year, two-month construction period.
- In 2012 the hospital will accommodate over 1,300 beds, 21% more than the facilities it will replace, with 30 operating theatres and a daily footfall through the front entrance of around 2,000 - 3,000 people.
- Employee numbers on site are predicted to peak at around 1,500.
