Key Facts:
Balfour Beatty Capital was awarded the 40-year, £553 million contract, for the new Birmingham Acute and Adult Psychiatric Hospitals.
It’s the first new general hospital in Birmingham for 70 years and the largest community healthcare development outside London.
The PPP (also known as PFI) contract involves the design, construction, financing, maintenance and management of the lifecycle replacement of the new hospitals.
The concession is for 35 years, following completion of the five-year, two-month construction period.
In 2012 the hospital will accommodate over 1,300 beds, 21% more than the facilities it will replace, with 30 operating theatres and a daily footfall through the front entrance of around 2,000 - 3,000 people.
Employee numbers on site are predicted to peak at around 1,500.
