Graduate FAQs

Q. When can I expect to hear back after submitting my application?
A: We will aim to let you know the outcome of your application within four weeks of your application being submitted.
Q. Can I apply for more than one graduate position?
A. There is no need to apply for more than one position. If your application is unsuccessful - providing you have given your consent - it may enter our central candidate pool should we feel you're suitable for other roles within the Balfour Beatty Group. You may then be contacted should a suitable vacancy arise. This way, we'll do the work for you.
Q. Can you tell me about the training and development that I will receive?
A. Our graduate development schemes give you the ideal foundation for your career, combining a variety of on- and off-the-job experience with the opportunity to achieve a professional qualification. Whichever scheme you join, you'll be assigned a mentor to offer advice and guidance on how to make the most of the development opportunities available to you. In the case of Engineering, Construction and Quantity Surveying graduates, the development schemes lead to a professional qualification with one of the major engineering institutions (ICE, IMechE, IET, CIBSE), or CIOB, RICS, ICES, and are structured in line with the institutions' guidelines.
Q. How many graduates do you recruit?
A. The number of graduates we recruit each year has been growing steadily. Over the past five years, we've recruited 566 graduates. We anticipate welcoming over 150 new graduates in 2008.
Q. Can I apply if I need a work permit?
To apply without a work permit you must be studying for, or have already obtained, a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying. Otherwise, unfortunately, we are unable to accept your application.
Q. I want to take a year off after I graduate, can I apply now and defer?
A. We would be happy for you to apply even if you are thinking of deferring for a year. Please make this clear on your application form and mention it to the Recruiting Manager at your interview.
Q. Should I be successful, when will I start?
A. Start dates for our graduate schemes are generally quite flexible. We understand you may want a long break over the summer before starting work or, alternatively, that you might want to get started as soon as possible. We can discuss a convenient date during your interview.
Q. Would there be an opportunity for me to work abroad?
A. Balfour Beatty is a large international company, employing nearly 35,000 people worldwide. Whilst there may be opportunities to work abroad later in your career, in the short term you are most likely to be based in the UK.
Q. What can I expect to earn?
A. Whichever graduate scheme you join, you will receive a competitive salary and a whole range of benefits. These include a pension scheme, private medical cover (after a qualifying period) and a travel allowance or company car (depending on the nature of your role). We'll also pay professional institution fees and provide up to 25 days' holiday per year. Further details will be discussed at your interview.
