Skills and training
People are at the heart of our business and training and up-skilling our people is key to the future success of our company.
In 2014 we were awarded significant funding through the UK Government’s Employer Ownership of Skills pilot scheme. Balfour Beatty will more than match this funding with a further £9 million to be invested in training opportunities across the business. This initiative is known as the Balfour Beatty Academy.
The focus will be on up-skilling our existing workforce in the construction and engineering sectors and will provide the young and unemployed with opportunities that lead directly to jobs. The academy will offer pre-employment programmes to give young people and the unemployed a taste of the industry and then onto apprenticeships or jobs.
The academy will bring together all of our current training provision under a single umbrella to offer a wide range of skills and professional qualifications. This approach means that these qualifications will be transferable across the business and the industry.
This initiative complements our membership of The 5% Club which we joined earlier in 2014, where we have committed to the aim of ensuring that 5% of our UK workforce are apprentices, graduates or sponsored students on structured programmes within the next five years.
