Hatfield appeal judgement

05 Jul 2006

Balfour Beatty Rail Infrastructure Services’ appeal against the level of the fine imposed upon it in respect of the Hatfield rail accident of October, 2000, was heard in the High Court on 16 May. This followed the company’s plea of guilty to charges brought under the Health and Safety at Work Act in respect of the accident.

Hatfield was a tragedy and our thoughts remain with the bereaved families and those injured and otherwise affected by it. In entering its plea BBRIS accepted inadequacies in its patrolling and inspection activities, for which it once again apologises.

The company notes the judgement handed down by the Court of Appeal today in which the fine was reduced by £2.5 million to £7.5 million.
