Balfour Beatty Receives a 13 Million Euro Order for a Light Rail System in Turkey

Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group, announces today that Balfour Beatty Rail Power Systems, its rail electrification and power supply business, has been awarded a €13 million subcontract from Bombardier Transportation for the electrification of the 14.2 km light rail transit system for the City of Eskisehir.

Balfour Beatty Rail Power Systems will be responsible for the design, supply and installation of the electrification system, including the overhead line system, power supply, SCADA system as well as one year of maintenance support.

Bombardier Transportation is responsible for the supply of 18 low-floor light rail vehicles and for the project management.

Yapi Merkezi will be responsible for construction of the triple leg, double-track tramway that will mainly run at grade in existing streets, including the 24 stations/tram stops, depot building and yard. The network is designed to handle around 170,000 passengers per day.

The total contract for the project is valued at some € 127 million. Service is expected to start early in 2004.

The worldwide market for rail engineering and services is growing under the influence of rapid traffic growth, the development of mass transit systems, rail utility restructuring and increased investment from the private sector. It is Balfour Beatty’s intent to build further on its position as a leader in fixed rail infrastructure around the world.

Also announced today is the agreement to acquire the signalling planning and design consultancy, IVV, from Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Germany GmbH for €1.2 million. IVV carries out work for Deutsche Bahn and independent contractors. It will become part of Balfour Beatty Rail Power Systems. It employes 64 staff, based predominantly in Braunschweig, Berlin and Leipzig.
