  • In August 2006, Balfour Beatty began work on the electrification of the 85km half double-track/ half single track line from Hamburg via Lübeck to Travemünde
  • The €50 million project is part of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn’s plan to meet growing future demand for passenger and freight transport in the region
  • Balfour Beatty is the main contractor on the project, which is divided into two lots and due for completion in 2008
  • All work will be completed while train services continue to run as normal
  • The work covers design, supply and installation of overhead contact line (15kV, 16.7Hz)
  • To accommodate the necessary catenary work, four road under-bridges will be renewed, in addition to lowering the tracks
  • As lead contractor, Balfour Beatty is responsible for the project management and for coordinating all other contractors 
  • This contract follows other recent, successful projects in the region, including the high-speed rail line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt
  • The Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line is the first railway line in Germany to be designed for speeds of over 300km per hour
