In August 2006, Balfour Beatty began work on the electrification of the 85km half double-track/ half single track line from Hamburg via Lübeck to Travemünde
The €50 million project is part of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn’s plan to meet growing future demand for passenger and freight transport in the region
Balfour Beatty is the main contractor on the project, which is divided into two lots and due for completion in 2008
All work will be completed while train services continue to run as normal
The work covers design, supply and installation of overhead contact line (15kV, 16.7Hz)
To accommodate the necessary catenary work, four road under-bridges will be renewed, in addition to lowering the tracks
As lead contractor, Balfour Beatty is responsible for the project management and for coordinating all other contractors
This contract follows other recent, successful projects in the region, including the high-speed rail line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt
The Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line is the first railway line in Germany to be designed for speeds of over 300km per hour
