- The project is the first of two phases and will extend the existing East London Line to Dalston Junction in north London and to New Cross Crystal Palace and West Croydon in south London
- Construction works began in early 2007 and the project is due to be completed in late 2009
- The contract involves complex railway works including track, signalling, telecommunications and electrification
- The civil engineering works include the construction of two large new bridges, new stations and a new depot at New Cross Gate
- Balfour Beatty Civil and Construction Plant Services supplied modular offices and welfare facilities, plus crawler cranes and general plant
- The new line will play a major role in transporting people to and from the 2012 Olympic Games
- It will also initiate substantial development and regeneration initiatives in some of London’s most deprived boroughs
