Heery, part of Balfour Beatty Management, was awarded the construction management contract to manage and co-ordinate the required works to extend the life of the historic ship Cutty Sark by 60 years
The objective is to make the ship more visitor-friendly whilst making provisions for disabled access and complying with the latest rules, regulations and requirements for a public facility
The intended changes will also create facilities for functions and events in this unique location
An ongoing consideration for Heery is to provide a temporary visitors’ centre to encourage the public to view and visit the ship whilst it is undergoing renovation
Work includes installation of two lifts, raising the ship by over 2m to allow access and viewing from the underside, enclosing the dry dock with a glazed roof and provision of a unique timber foyer and stairway
All the ship’s planks have been removed to allow restoration of the metal framework
As a result of much of this original structure being removed part-way through the conservation project, damage was fortunately limited following the unexplained fire in 2007
The work programme is continuing and has been extended by approximately nine months to address the damage done by the fire
